The Strategy–Capability Gap
Your organisation has strategic clarity. The problem is it assumes capabilities that don't exist, or exist in pieces that don't connect.
The strategy says "customer-first" but nobody has mapped what that requires. The plan calls for speed, but People, Process, Technology, and Information operate as separate kingdoms. Leadership approves initiatives. Middle management can't staff them.
The gap isn't effort. It's architecture. Your strategy is writing checks your capability structure can't cash.
Do This Week
Pick one strategic priority. List the four elements it requires: the People (skills, capacity), the Process (how work flows), the Technology (tools, systems), and the Information (data, insights). Rate each 1–5. The lowest score is your binding constraint. That's where investment actually matters.
Your Path Forward
There's a discipline for closing this gap. The Develop phase teaches capability architecture: designing the systems your strategy assumes but doesn't yet have. You'll use the Capability Heat Map to see where you're over-investing, under-investing, and missing entirely.
Lakeshore in 30 Seconds
Marcus Chen walks down a hallway. On the left: a program whose graduates employers fight to hire. On the right: a program whose graduates employers barely notice. Same institution. Same funding. Same mission statement on the wall. The difference wasn't effort. It was architecture. One program had designed People, Process, Technology, and Information to work as a system. The other had invested in each separately and hoped they'd connect. This course follows what happened when leadership finally saw the difference.
What Changes
You'll see capabilities as systems: four elements that either work together or don't work at all
You'll categorize investments by strategic role (Core, Essential, Context) instead of by politics or history
You'll map value streams to reveal where handoffs between capabilities create or destroy value
You'll prototype before you build, testing the riskiest assumptions first
